On that fateful day, she had closed from her shop by 8pm on that fateful day but her car wouldn’t start so she decided to use public transport, specifically the tricycles popularly referred to as ‘Keke’.

She had to get down from the Keke at a bus stop so as to enter another Keke that will take her to house, she had decided to wait at the bus stop because she felt it was safer even though there was just one person there and it was dark as the time was 10 minutes to 9pm. 

After waiting for a Keke to pass, she started noticing the man she had met sitting at the bus stop was moving towards her.

She thought he wanted to talk but the next thing he grabbed her bag and they struggled until he snatched it and ran away.

She started screaming but there was no one nearby to help until a lady and two other men ran from the street close to the bus stop to ask her what happened. 

She told them in tears what had just happened and they told her sympathized.

One of the men gave her N500 to use a s transport fare because inside her bag were her phones, wallet and the sum of N150,000 that was meant as capital for her business.

She had withdrawn the money from the ATM as she was supposed to go to the market the following day to buy goods to stock her shop.

After she narrated this story to my aunty, I felt sorry for her…

But the truth is Nigeria is no longer as safe as because, you could be walking on the street and get kidnapped.

You could enter a bus and get robbed.

In fact, you could be in your estate that you feel is safe and get attacked.

What makes the current issue of insecurity in Nigeria even worse is that we don’t have a strong security network.

In other counties like the United States, they can easily call 911 (the public security number) and police will quickly come to their rescue but here in Nigeria, very few states have public security numbers you can call for help and even when you get across to them they might not be able to help you.

Recently, the governor of Zamfara State announced to the citizens of the state to go and buy guns to protect themselves.

Even if Zamfara state is known for banditry what of other states like even Lagos and even the Capital city, Abuja where their hoodlums and street robbers on every corner.
